Setting standards in the transportation industry, Maines was recognized as the “Innovator of the Year” for establishing the Maines Driver Institute in 1996 to give tractor-trailer drivers the opportunity to improve their performance and professionalism. The Maines Driver Institute not only prepares students for CDL certification, it emphasizes customer service, delivery accuracy, and advanced driving skills that set graduates apart from the competition. While many graduates go on to drive for Maines, others receive placement assistance and then work for both local and national companies. To date, 650 drivers have been trained and placed nationwide. The commitment of the Maines Driver Institute to each student’s success is evident in a 90 percent placement rate.
Combining Technical Knowledge with Real-World Application
At the Maines Driver Institute, students are first educated about the technical and mechanical aspects of truck driving. For example, students are introduced to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and are required to take brake classes. This technical instruction is complemented by real-world, hands-on application of the skills learned in a business setting: Students also create trip and mileage-per-load reports.
Graduates gain a customer-focused attitude through training that is becoming increasingly valuable to potential employers. Real-world frustrations such as mechanical breakdowns and unexpected traffic and weather patterns are experienced with the support of instructors there to guide students through. Graduates leave the Maines Driver Institute ready for the road ahead! Please contact Darius Markham, the Director of Maines Driver Training Institute, for more details.
