Our legacy began in 1919 when Floyd L. Maines, Sr. founded Maines Candy Company and sold nickel candy to local grocers. The average order was $20 and first-year sales were $30,000.
In 1947, Floyd L. Maines, Jr. joined the family business after serving five years in the Navy. While his first choice was the FBI, his father convinced him to join Maines Candy Company. Floyd Jr. expanded into fountain supplies, toys, and paper products. Together with a group of salesmen, Maines Candy Company grew the business four-fold.
Floyd Jr.'s sons, David and Bill, joined the family business in 1970 and 1978 respectively. They took the business into foodservice and extended the product offerings to include frozen and canned goods, beverage items and cleaning chemicals. With this product line expansion, the company name was changed to Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc.
Maines began pursuing the casual dining segment of the industry which powered the company's growth through the 1980s. By the mid-1980s, Maines earned a ranking of 43 in Institutional Distributor magazine’s Top 50 Food Distributors in the Nation.
In 1984, the Maines Cash & Carry store was opened to serve both independent operators and the public in a retail capacity. Today, the four MaineSource retail locations stock a wide variety of dry, frozen, and fresh food items as well as cleaning chemicals, smallwares, and party goods.
Due to unprecedented growth, in 1987 a second distribution center was opened in Cleveland, Ohio. This facility served multi-unit accounts throughout the Midwest.
Always seeking ways to better serve customers, Maines acquired an equipment, supply and contracting company in 1990. Maines then offered customers a full line of smallwares and equipment, contract design services, and full HVAC and refrigeration installation and service.
In 1996, the Maines Driver Institute was established to ensure Maines could attract, train, and retain a professional delivery force to meet the growing business demands of our customers. The Institute provides necessary training for a CDL license, and has a reputation today as one of the finest driver schools in the Northeast. It was selected by Institutional Distributor magazine as Innovation of the Year by a Foodservice Distributor.
A 360,000 square foot, world-class Maines distribution center and headquarters were constructed in 1999 in Conklin, NY. In 2004, a 100,000 square foot warehouse and freezer addition was made. This state-of-the-art facility has five temperature zones and temperature-controlled shipping and receiving docks. The sophisticated Maines Learning Center was also constructed which features a fully functional test kitchen and demonstration area for product cuttings, menu roll-outs and training sessions.
The largest growth in Maines history took place in 2000 when four new distribution centers were opened in Oxford, MA; Oakwood Village, OH; Farmingdale, NY; and Conklin, NY to serve over 1,700 Burger King restaurants. Today, Maines is the nation's largest foodservice distributor in the Burger King system.
Currently, Maines is the seventh largest broadline distributor in the country, and one of the largest independent systems distributors in the country - and we’re poised for further growth. With the synergy created between the Maines family’s entrepreneurial spirit, the world-class facilities, and hard-working employees, the future looks bright for Maines and its customers.
